New Swedish drama

DramaDirectory was founded by Writers Guild of Sweden in 1997 in order to increase the availability of Swedish drama. The plays are placed on the Internet for theatres and others in the trade, as well as the general public to search and read. Plays pass from hand to hand, are Xeroxed and the copyright is neglected. This is also the case with translations, which are often corrupted and the original author is lost. In order to help playwrights in their delicate situation and to help theatres in their search for new material, The Swedish Playwrights Union has set up the virtual drama bank DramaDirectory.

DramaDirectory collects Swedish drama in a library on the Internet. Everyone can access the library and search for titles, authors, subjects, synopses, number of parts, etc. Information about the plays and short descriptions are available to all. The full-length versions of the plays can be ordered as a print-on-demand paperback at a cost of SEK 126 per play. Most of the plays are only available in Swedish, but we are working at collecting translations in various languages. Theatres may apply for a password and read the plays online at no cost.

All the plays in DramaDirectory are protected according to copyright laws. To produce a play, please contact the playwright or his/her agent. For more information please visit: www.dramadirectory.com

in Berlin, 20 - 23 September 2010

Keith Johnstone teaches how to improvise in public, as entertainment. He invented "Theatresports", "Gorilla Theatre" and "Micetro". "I mean, an improviser should be more than just a comedian. He should be able to impersonate all dreams and nightmares which are locked in the minds of the audience." Writers like John Arden, Wole Soyinka, Arnold Wesker and Edward Bond were amongst its members. In 1971 he moved to Canada to teach at Calgary University. There he founded the "Loose Moose Theatre" and became its artistic director. He is the author of ‘IMPRO’ (Methuen), one of the best-selling books on improvisation, and ‘Impro For Storytellers’ (Faber and Faber).
