BOX 163 FIN-00531 HELSINKI, FINLAND The University of Tampere, Department of Acting (Näty) The University of Tampere, which is primarily a university of sciences, has educated actors since 1967. The University of Tampere, in addition to the Theatre academy, provides theatre education of the highest level in Finland. The studies follow the new structure of 3+2 years. The Bachelor’s degree, common to all, is completed in three years, followed by the Master’s studies of two years duration, based on the students’ own choices. It is possible to complete two university degrees in five years. The five-year master of theatre and drama degree leads to actor’s profession. From 10 to 14 new students are selected to the degree programme. It is also possible to take postgraduate degrees in theatrical arts at the acting department (Licentiate in theatre and drama, Doctor in theatre and drama). The starting point is the artist’s research – one’s own artistic work being the central point along with research topics arising from it. Theatre work in practice is studied at Näty, in particular from the actor’s point of view. Research made by artists is still creating its own practices with the first doctorates. Thus, it is not in comparison with scientific research and its long traditions. The Department of Acting is one of the most popular departments at the University.
